Sell medical data to AI companies: 6 buyers, what they pay, on what terms
The list holds six data buyers for medical data. None publishes a price for it. Protege quotes a "flat fee per training window; usage-based deals". Defined.ai, which lists medical data among its types, says content owners get "20 to 30% of deal value". Truveta shares with member health systems and reports 120M+ patients.
Three editor's picks open the list. Segmed buys medical imaging and radiology reports from hospitals and imaging centers, licenses non-exclusively, runs a data-supplier program, and works with NVIDIA and RadImageNet. Gradient Health buys medical imaging from hospital data partners on non-exclusive terms. HealthVerity runs an exchange for claims, health records and lab data, pays a revenue share, and onboards suppliers through its network. All three name AI developers or pharma as their buyers without naming labs.
Four of the six license non-exclusively; Protege varies by deal, and Truveta is open to member health systems only. In the contract, check who performs de-identification and by which method, and whether re-identification and linkage are barred. Check whether the grant covers training only or also derivative models, and for how long. Ask whether the buyer wants raw DICOM files and full notes or a curated, labeled set. Revenue-share deals need a clear reporting and audit clause.

How much do AI companies pay for medical data?
None of the six buyers publishes a rate for medical data. Segmed, Gradient Health, HealthVerity and Defined.ai pay a revenue share, and Protege sells on a flat fee per training window or usage-based deals. Defined.ai pays content owners 20 to 30% of deal value across its data types.
Can I sell the same medical data to two buyers?
Segmed, Gradient Health, HealthVerity and Defined.ai license non-exclusively. Protege varies by deal. Truveta is a consortium that shares with member health systems only.
Is there a minimum size?
Each buyer onboards suppliers through its own program: Segmed's data-supplier site, Gradient Health's hospital data partners and HealthVerity's supplier onboarding. Truveta requires health-system membership. Defined.ai publishes no minimum.
Do I need a lawyer?
Patient data in the US falls under HIPAA, so it must be de-identified and its use set in a data use agreement. Counsel can check who performs de-identification, whether re-identification is barred, and whether derivative models are covered.
